Being the founder of Beautiful Because, and a beauty editor prior to that, I have been fortunate enough to try many amazing products over the years. I often get asked what my personal favourites are, but I don’t tend to write just about them, since I've carefully vetted and tried all the brands we stock here, selecting only the very best in terms of quality, performance and eco- and cruelty-free credentials, so I truly believe they are all excellent choices, depending on one's personal preference. Afterall, we all have different skin types, ages, suit certain makeup colours, prefer particular skin care formulas, and have our own budgets. But today, due to a number of requests, I've decided to share with you the products I choose to use regularly, either daily, or weekly, and why I love them so.
This is my favourite cleanser for every day since it is super gentle but effective, it has a beautiful subtle scent and removes most makeup. I always use a muslin face cloth too; not only is it an enjoyable ritual but helps exfoliate skin for a deeper cleanse and skin renewal. If I need something extra to remove stronger eye makeup, I sometimes use Micellar Water. Every other day, I use a scrub, in particular Madara Oil-To-Milk Scrub.
I love all rose water spritz and mists, but my very favourite, which is a bit more pricey, is the May Lindstrom Jasmine Mist because, well, not only does is smell divine like warm summer evenings in Sydney, when the plant's in full bloom, but because it instantly hydrates and revives my skin, whether I am continuing my skin care routine or leaving it there.
There are many reasons why this face oil has earned a cult status around the world, but the reason I love it is because it seems to instantly perfect any skin issues I may be having; my skin looks clearer and more radiant and feels petal soft. I have been super-impressed by the results; even noticing my pores diminish after just a few days of using it morning and evening. It also kisses skin with a golden glow, so sometimes this is all I need! On a good skin day, that is... It contains a powerhouse of 22 precious active plant botanical and essential oils that harmoniously work in synergy to deliver impressive results.
I also highly recommend Vanessa Megan’s NEO for a more affordable alternative.
It is very important to wear at least a mild SPF each day. I have been put off zinc-oxide based sunscreens in the past due to them feeling heavy or cakey, but this is the bee’s knees since it is lightweight, effective and also super nourishing to skin; jam-packed with antioxidants to help protect against free radical damage. In terms of a body sunscreen, Simple As That is my top pick as it is also very lightweight and effective.
There are many natural foundations I use, and they are all brilliant for different skin types and preferences, but day-to-day, on good skin days, I always reach for Vapour’s Liquid Foundation, it gives a really natural luminous finish and smells divine with just enough coverage. Shade s123 is also my perfect colour match.
No makeup is complete without beautiful brows! Defining and grooming your brows for the first time, I swear is like having a natural face lift! I have quite a lot of brow hair, but there are gaps in places. Ecobrow wax works really well to feel in any gaps and help create neat shape and shading to brows. Sharon is my shade, but they have a natural hue for everyone!
Kjaer Weis is one of my favourite makeup brands for their eco luxe, sustainable packaging, where you purchase the compact once then buy the refill next time. This works particularly well for the mascara; a product that should be changed every few months due to hygiene reasons. I also really like this mascara for its natural, buildable finish. I also love the Kjaer Weis cream blushers, in particular Sun Touched.
I love the Gressa eye tints and lip boosts; this shade Bronce - really enhances all eye colours, but particularly blue eyes, for it has a plummy undertone. I use it as an eyeliner on the upper and lower lash lines. I am also loving their new shade, Charbon, a charcoal grey. I also use INIKA Organic Eyeliner White Crystal on the inner rim of my lower lash line to widen and brighten my eyes.
Axiology Lipsticks are perfect if you like a little shimmer and a natural look. They are not bold or matt, but soft and creamy. My favourite colour for every day is Devotion since it has just the right mix of pink and brown for the perfect "my lips but better" natural look. The luxe gold casing is also beautiful, better still the outer packaging is made from recycled paper. In my photo (above), I am wearing Karen Murrell Natural Lipstick True Love, another favourite of mine :-)
I am super sensitive under there!! So, for every day, I will use INDAH No.5 Active Spray Deodorant as all I need is super gorgeous smelling with melissa and marshmallow root. The antibacterial property is thanks to colloidal silver. It’s a game-changer!!
If I need something stronger, for a gym workout say, I will use a bicarb based deodorant such as Black Chicken Axilla.
For every day deliciousness Vanessa Megan’s Essential Blend is essential to my daily beauty routine. A fresh, fragrant floral and green scent is made from a unique blend of five essential oils, which are known to calm and relax the mind and body. Other favourites of mine include Acorelle Lotus Dream and Aromantik The Blossom Thief.
I love a good face mask, and there are many we stock I would use for different skin concerns and purposes, but the one I reach for, at least once a week, when I have some time to relax and unwind is May Lindstrom’s. There is just something so gratifying about blending it together in a beautiful china bowl, to form a mousse consistency of black goodness – a blend of antioxidant-rich raw cacao, activated bamboo charcoal, soil nutrients, salts and exotic spices. It warms ups on skin and then detoxifies with delightful ease, left on for about 20 minutes, it leaves skin radiant and fresh, and my mind eased! The price tag may be hefty, but there is 250mls in a pot, and all you need is a spoonful each application, I have had the same jar for about 8 months, and it's still half full!
For when I want an extra boost, I use The Divine Woman’s Collagen Enhancing Night Cream, it really feels like it is instantly firming skin, and it has a super natural ingredient Phycojuvenine G – a concentrated seaweed extract that increases the rate of cellular renewal by stimulating the stem cells in the dermis. If I am to use an eye cream (I often forget!), then MUKTI Rosehip Eye Gel is my favourite it is cooling, fresh and hydrating.
It’s easy to remember to moisturise our faces, but neglect our bodies. Post-shower / bath I always remember to moisturise all-over. Erica Brooke’s Detox Body Oil is my go-to for every day since it feels (and smells) divine! It contains a carefully chosen combination of carrier and essential oils will help to detoxify, while still moisturising the skin's outer layers. It’s also great for cellulite!
My recent discovery, new favourite shampoo is Rahua’s Colour Full; the creamy but lightweight shampoo cleanses well and leaves hair full of vibrancy. Infused with gorgeous gardenia enfleurage and lavender essences this nourishing shampoo provides full spectrum colour protection for all shades of hair. I find the violet hue also helps neutralise brassy tones in blonde.
This toothpaste is the best natural formula I have come across in terms of being really refreshing. I never seem to get stains on my teeth using this, and since switching to natural I rarely go to the hygienist. It really works and tastes great! The brand’s mouthwash is also excellent. I also like to oil-pull and use a charcoal treatment a few times a week, such as My Magic Mud.
See, it’s SO hard to choose! Most of the above products are more luxury ones, it seems I have expensive taste! But there are always exceptionally good, more affordable options and alternatives, with so many incredible brands to choose from.
