Detoxify your Skincare

So you've made the decision to go for green, beauty that is, but don't know where to start or what to buy. Well, luckily BB is here to help, with our top 5 tips on how to detoxify your beauty regimen, what to prioritise and where to start!

1.  Read Labels

Always read the labels and look out for nasty toxins, including PEGs, Parabens and Petrochemicals. Look for brands with the fewest ingredients and clear labels. Check out our toxic beauty list for further information.

Although organic certifiers differ in their criteria, remember that brands truly containing organic ingredients will have official certifier, such as The Organic Food Chain, Australian Organic, Natrue and USDA Organic.

2. Prioritise Products

Replacing your skin care products can be a pricey job. Start with the products you use most regularly and prioritise those absorbed into the skin, for instance, shower gel and facial cleanser are designed to be washed off unlike body lotion, serums and moisturisers. Moisturisers and treatment products are a good place to start.

3. Swot Up

Choose products for your skin type and concerns, familiarise yourself with the ingredients best for you. For example, rich cream containing essential fatty acids and anti-ageing oils such as rosehip or olive oil are ideal for dry and mature skins, whereas an oily skin type will require a lighter and more refreshing formula with ingredients such as citrus fruits, green tea and calendula.  Check out our skin type and concerns articles for advice on ingredients: normal/combination skinoily skin, dry skin, mature skin, sensitive skin, acne skin, rosacea.

4. Less Is More

There is little point trying to live a greener life by just replacing all your synthetic products for natural alternatives. Most of us have jam-packed beauty cupboards and makeup bags for all products we never use. All you really need is a handful of good quality products that do the job amazingly. Start with a good moisturiser, followed by a cleanser. You may also choose to use a toner to refresh and further clarify skin, and a serum to target a particular skin concern, such as anti-ageing rosehip oil. But remember, less really is more when it comes to natural beauty!

5. Be Patient

It may take your skin a little while to adjust to natural products. It will usually take a few weeks of using a new skin care regimen before you start to notice healthier, stronger and calmer skin, you may even experience some breakouts on the way!
