Beautiful Because caught up with the beautiful and inspirational Rockell Williamson-Rudder, Xtend Barre international director, to find out more about the total body workout taking Australia by storm, and her own health and beauty regimens.
BB: What is Xtend Barre and how did you come to teach it?
RW: I was a professional dancer and worked in the entertainment industry from aged 17, with dance contracts all over the world including the Moulin Rouge in Paris. While dancing, I did Pilates and it sparked my interest to become an instructor, which I did for many years. When I relocated to the USA I started doing barre classes and searched for the best barre workout.
I discovered Xtend Barre and instantly fell in love with it for its Pilates and Ballet mix. It felt different from every other barre class I had tried. I was then invited to become a master trainer which led to me introducing it to Australia. Our workout is a 55 minute total body workout that takes the best from Pilates and dance and combines them in a class that tones, strengthens and lengthens the body, while burning calories with our cardio element and, above all, having fun!
BB: What are the benefits and results?
RW: Improved posture is one of the first things you hear people say they notice after doing a class. They look and feel taller and have a sense of poise and grace in their stance. Their arms are toned beautifully, their thighs streamlined and butt lifted! Aside from the stunning physical results people can achieve from our workout, what I love the most is that guests enter the studio happy to do an Xtend Barre workout and leave the class even happier!
BB: What is your personal health & fitness regime?
RW: I do Xtend Barre and Pilates regularly. My two little boys also keep me on my toes running around after them. I try to eat clean foods but also allow myself days to indulge. I have a weakness for cheese! I am addicted to kale and quinoa and my favourite juice is spinach, kale, lemon, lime, cucumber, green apple and lots of ginger. I love super foods and would only detox if I needed a kick start to my body. I don’t remember the last time I got sick and I think that it is because of the ginger!
BB: What would you recommend to beginners of Xtend Barre?
RW: Don’t be overwhelmed by the terminology and some of the moves. We use some of the traditional French ballet words (which may just be a fancy way for saying bends your knees!). We also use some ballet positions in a fitness format which may feel a bit strange in the beginning but, like anything new, give yourself 5 or 6 classes to understand the ‘lingo’ and positions.
BB: Which prominent Aussies enjoy Xtend Barre?
RW: Some of our gorgeous Aussie Xtenders are Erika Heynatz, Megan Gale, Teresa Palmer, Phoebe Tonkin, Tahyna Tozzi, Stephanie Rice, Sarah Murdoch, and Tanya Zaetta.
BB: Do you take any supplements to maintain your energy level?
RW: When I travel I take Juice Plus. Sometimes I will find myself in a situation where I can’t get the foods I want to eat and Juice Plus has been my back up plan, but nothing beats fresh produce.
BB: Which organic or natural beauty products are your favourites?
RW: I use a combination of both. I use Eco Tan for my fake tan and Eminence products on my skin. Tarte make a great Amazonian clay foundation. Buddha Balm does the best lip balm. I also use Obagi Face Sunblock.
BB: What are your favourite beauty treatments?
RW: I love to get microdermabrasion on my face and reflexology is my heavenly body treatment. When I get massages I have trouble relaxing and switching off my mind but with reflexology I go to that Zen place.
BB: What is your top beauty tip?
RW: Have makeup free days. We forget how fresh we look without makeup. I love to put a face on like everyone else but it’s nice to just pop on a little mascara and lip balm.
BB: What do you think makes someone beautiful?
RW: A smile – feeling that inner happiness in someone’s face smiling. Not just their mouth, but seeing that smile in their eyes. That is what I love the most about Xtend Barre. I get to be surrounded by all these beautiful, inspiring people all the time that SMILE!
BB: What's next on the horizon for you?
RW: In October I will be doing our Xtend Barre 60 day challenge. It is going to be a wonderful journey that encourages you internally and externally to care for your body. Our Xtenders will be able to choose whether you commit to 3, 4 or 5 classes a week and then your nutrition guide will also vary, core, hard core or Xtreme core.
