Beautiful Skin from Within

We have all heard the saying "you are what you eat" and although true is easier said than done, especially for those of us on the go and on a budget. But eat enough of the right foods to keep your digestive tract and liver well and in turn have healthier, clearer skin. Here are Beautiful Because’s favourite super foods for beautiful skin.

H2O

Water is needed by every organ in the body which will take what's needed for the major organs, such as the brain and heart, first, meaning that the skin (though the body's largest organ) gets hydrated last. Drink at least six glasses of water a day for a clearer skin and mind.

Fruits and Veggies

Get your five a day for the best source of anti-ageing antioxidants.

Super fruits include:

Blueberries, blackberries, acai berries, strawberries, raspberries, prunes and raisins.

Top tip: Try freshly squeezing your own orange juice for a purer and cheaper drink

Super veggies include:

Garlic, spinach, kale, brocolli, beetroot, avocado and sprouts

LSA  (combination of linseed, sunflower seed and almond)

LSA is a good source of essential fatty acids (omega-3, 6 and 9), as well as proteins, fibre, vitamins and zinc. It can help cleanse the liver.

Top tip: Try adding a spoonful to cereal or porridge.

Cold pressed seed oils

Flaxseed, linseed, rapeseed oil rich in omega-3 needed to help maintain mental and physical wellbeing.

Oily fish

Try to eat oily fish at least three times a week. Mackerel, herrings, salmon, trout, tuna and sardines are rich in omega-3.

Reduce dairy

Too much dairy can be bad for the digestive tract and cause weight gain. Try soy milk as an alternative.

Reduce sugar

Not only is too much bad for your health (with links to heart disease and diabetes) but your skin too, causing premature wrinkles and cellulite.

Beans, Lentils, Soy and Nuts

Are all a good source of protein and fibre. Nuts such as walnuts are good for the heart and brazil nuts contain selenium which can help protect against cancer and improve thyroid function.

Live, organic yogurt

Probiotic yogurt containing live cultures can help aid digestion, maintain a healthy gut, lower cholesterol and support blood sugar level.

Millet

Rich in silica to help maintain healthy hair, skin and nails.

Oats

Slow-release energy source. They lower blood-pressure and cholesterol.

Green Tea

Helps protect against heart disease, cancer, tooth decay and arthritis.

Eating healthily may be a balancing act but stick to it and your skin (as well as your all-round health) will reap the beautiful rewards.
