Natural Beauty with Mukti

Beautiful Because talk to Mukti Organics' beautiful founder, Mukti herself, about how her leading, certified organic brand came to be, the native ingredients she uses, and her own health and wellness journey.

How did your health and wellness journey begin?

I grew up in the country and nature played a big role in my daily life. I always feel more connected and peaceful when in touch with the natural beauty and rhythms of life. I studied naturopathy in Brisbane back in the nineties. It was around this time that I also discovered I was riddled with Candida and by changing my diet, I turned my life around.

What inspired you to start Mukti Organics?

There really weren’t many natural brands around the time that I began and organic skin care did not exist. I set a benchmark against a few popular biodynamic European brands and my journey started from there. I began formulating with simple products – the honey and macadamia lip balm and the mist toners then went on to explore emulsions. When I realised I needed to understand more about the science behind formulating, I decided to study cosmetic chemistry.

What sets Mukti apart from other brands?

We have been certified organic since 2006 making us one of the first brands in Australia to become certified organic. We manufacture in house so we are in control of all our procedures.

With the recent reformulation, we are using high concentrations of bioactive native Australian extracts that are results driven. The native Australian extracts are extremely potent as far as their antioxidant activity, vitamins and cosmeceutical capacity. No one else to date is using this grade of extracts at this level of activity. Each product has its own unique synergy pertaining to the skin condition. The products are results driven without the chemicals. The addition of the products being housed in Miron glass aids to protect, preserve and energise the products allowing a longer shelf life and increased product stability.

As one of the first certified organic brands, what challenges did you face?

Finding raw materials was the most time consuming part and of course abiding by the strict criterion in relation to natural emulsifiers (that bind the oil and water components), surfactants (cleansing agents) and of course natural preservatives.

Tell us about the native plant extracts used in your formulas

Native extracts have incredible quantities of Vitamin C, E and other antioxidants. When applied to the skin in skincare products these nutrients offer sun protection, aid in skin lightening, have an anti-inflammatory effect, are exceptionally hydrating and provide superior skin conditioning. Australian native plants have evolved to withstand constant exposure to harsh sunlight. They contain an efficient system to protect themselves from the oxidative stress caused by sun-induced free radicals.

It is thought that the extreme nature of Australia’s climate and the conditions these plants are able to survive in has produced the extraordinary potency found in the concentrated extractions.

We use kakadu plum (Terminalia ferdinandiana) in almost all our new formulations.  It is one of the most studied super food actives due to its rich and bioavailable vitamin C content. Vitamin C is an antioxidant and free radical scavenger that protects the skin from harm and promotes collagen and elastin.

Tell us about the cosmeceutical peptides in Age Defiance

Peptides are short chain amino acids or proteins that are manufactured by our bodies and occur naturally in the skin. They act as messengers and play a key role in natural skin healing and processes. They have a soothing, nourishing effect and assist with age defence, skin repair, maintenance and rejuvenation. The amino acid sequence and chain structure determine the specific biological activity and function. Each of the serums has a specific function:

Day – plumping and toning

Night – lightening and brightening creating a more luminous skin tone

Eye – targets fine lines, puffy eyes, dark circles and crow’s feet.

What motivates you each day?

Knowing that I am making a small difference without contributing to the environmental burden of the planet and that our products are assisting people with skin problems who also want to avoid the use of chemicals.

What’s next for Mukti Organics?

I have a few more products that are in their research and development phases to complete the balancing and hydrating ranges plus a few more body and hair care products. My favourite activity is researching and concocting new formulations.

The beauty product you can’t be without:

The age defiance collection – it really works, that’s why I created it!!!

Your top DIY beauty tip:

Soaking in a bath with magnesium salts, oats and milk. It calms the nerves, softens and hydrates the skin.

Your best anti-ageing beauty secret:

Keep hydrated, keep your jaw relaxed and smile even when the going gets tough.

Your fave way to relax:

Walking along the beach or in nature.

Your fave way to exercise:

I do 3-4 weight sessions a week, some yoga and stretching, and if I am feeling gnarly I take a boxing class.

Your fave healthy food:

I make a wicked protein shake in the morning (that isn’t green) - 1 teaspoon of super food mix, 2 heaped tablespoons of pure protein powder, 1 cup coconut water, 2 tablespoons coconut yoghurt, ½ banana, ¾ cup organic blue berries, and 1 tsp chia seeds.

It energises me post workout and the chia seeds assist with elimination.

What do you think makes someone beautiful?

Self-love, inner contentment and happiness, we wear our expressions on our faces. Every time we tense our facial muscles we add years to how old we look. We can change the neural pathways when we smile. Beauty really does come from within.
