Top Tips for Naturally Beautiful Hair

It is easy to damage our hair without even knowing! But, regular hair cuts aside, there are some simple steps we can take at home to help keep it naturally beautiful, as hairdresser Stella De Zotti reveals:

1. Check your hair band type

Use the correct type of hair elastic for your hair. A thick flat band is best for tying hair back. Skinny fine elastics tend to 'strangle' the hair, therefore, wearing down the hair and causing breakage. Plaiting rather than tying your hair can also prevent breakage reoccurring.

2. Maintain protein and moisture

These two are important for maintaining strength and hydration in the hair. Using a natural haircare masque once a month or more frequently for damaged hair can really turn your hair around.

Applying coconut oil to dry hair will penetrate into the hair shaft and help re-moisture dry hair. Because of the molecular structure of coconut oil, it tends penetrate the hair rather than sit on the surface: Apply as necessary. Leave on for 20-30 minutes. You will need to shampoo the oil out after. It is also great for split ends!

3. Use a wide tooth comb

Always use a wide tooth comb to detangle wet hair. Using a brush on wet hair will tear and break the hair. Start from the bottom of your hair and work your way up towards the scalp to avoid combing all the hair into one big knot.

4. Blow dry rather than iron

Try to blow dry your hair (using a thermal protector) over straightening irons. Straightening irons reach extremely high temperatures. Your hair will thank you for it. Or better still, really go au naturel and let you hair dry naturally in plaits for beachy waves.

5. Sleep like a princess

Sleep on a satin pillowcase! Tossing and turning during the night can cause the hair to knot and tangle due to the friction on cotton pillowcases. The satin alternative helps to keep your hair smooth until morning.
