Natural Skincare for Sun Damaged Skin

Living in such a warm and sunny place as Australia may be like being on one big summer holiday but means our skin is getting over exposed to the sun. With a little TLC and the necessary precautions sun damage can be repaired and prevented from getting worse.

Sun damage may not show up on the skin's surface for many years and can be in the form of age spots, pigmentation, thick leathery skin, redness, premature wrinkles, broken capillaries and dehydration. Worse still, sun damage can lead to melanoma so if you are someone who spends a lot of time outdoors, or did when you were younger, it is wise to get regular skin check ups.

When it comes to natural skin care, there are a number of skin healing ingredients that work on a cellular level, ideal for sun damaged skin. These include plant derived squalene, such as olive. Squalene is a natural lipid produced by healthy skin cells but which can be lost through sun damage – helping to keep skin hydrated and healthy; Naturally occurring vitamin A, found in rosehip and jojoba oil, which heals, repairs and normalises skin cells – helping with pigmentation and wrinkles; Essential fatty acids, which are building blocks for collagen and will strengthen skin's barrier function – helping with broken capillaries.

Use a good quality, gentle cream cleanser, avoiding anything that foams which can dehydrate and further damage skin, followed by a hydrating toner to condition skin and prepare it for your serum/oil and moisturiser. By day, use a moisturiser containing SPF to protect your skin from the sun. By night, use a rich repairing cream to maximise skin healing. If you are using jojoba or rosehip oil, apply this before your moisturiser. You may also be interested in using a separate eye cream to target deep lines.  For an extra boost, once a week, you could treat dehydrated skin to a face mask.

At Beautiful Because we recommend the following skin care products:

Now, you don't want to make any existing sun damage more severe. Prevention really is the best cure, simply the best things you can do are stay out the midday sun, wear a sun hat and use a good natural sunscreen. We love WOTNOT's Natural Sunscreen SPF 30. If you can't avoid the sun and do experience any burning, immediately treat with a natural after sun product to help restore lost moisture and soothe redness. We love Lavera's Sun Sensitiv Organic After Sun, containing aloe vera.
